Under 16 Boys

Sunday 25th March 2012

An early start saw Folkestones U16’s heading up to Bromley.

Folkestone went straight in from the oppositions push-back and looked good from the off. Good strong passing down the middle by Willem B, Ames B and Ashley M kept play moving in the right direction. A fantastic run by Willem coupled with a great ball which set up Dan M to score the 1st goal in the 10th minute.

Excellent team work saw a succession of attacking short corners which led to a great strike by Willem that flew past the Brom Becs keeper in the 17th minute.

Brom Becs had some good breaks but the strong and determined defensive lines of Aaron M, Ryan, Josh C and Charlie B and a tidy save by keeper Mat W meant Folkestone were 2-0 up at half time

The second half started as well as the first and with well timed passes and true team work the 3rd goal came from a lovely pass from Emily B to Dan M who after a great run, finished with a firm strike into the top corner of the goal.

Brom Bec came back fighting but the strong defending by Danny T and tireless work from Jacob Mc made it difficult for them to make a break. When a break did get through, Matt W made another super save. A minor defensive blip saw Brom Becs claw back a lucky goal, which was then answered straight away with some strong and amazing team play and a fantastic run from the speedy Becca S, followed by a beautiful cross to Dan M on the P spot, where the Capt swept the ball past the keeper to get his hatrick.

In the dying minutes of the game a controversial P flick was awarded to Brom Bec and after a tense wait, the magnificent keeping skills of Matt W, made the save, leading to the final whistle and the 4-1 victory.

Every player in this talented squad showed real skill, effort and team work which was reflected in the result and was a pleasure to watch. Well Done.

Folkestone Boys U16 – 4
Gore Court Boys U16 – 5

In a keenly contested match, play from these juniors excited the crowd and produced 9 fine goals. Folkestone took the lead 6 mins into the game when Willem Bygrave put a delightful through ball to Joe Levick at left wing. A confident start! With 8 minutes to go another trade mark Bygrave through ball saw Ames Bell well positioned to slap the ball home. Feeling good at half time with a 2-0 lead but lucky as GC had had several chances, Ops began the second half. 2 minutes in Court scored their first but Folkestone came back with an extra-ordinary run from the half way line by Bygrave who put an exquisite pass to Aaron Evison who neatly converted the pass. GC scored 2 in fairly quick succession leaving the score 3-3. GC, a talented side, seemed to step up the pressure and punished the defence with 2 further goals despite excellent keeping from Matt Whitehead. In the last minutes of the game Aaron Evison skilfully converted a one-on-one with the GC keeper to finalise an exciting match.

Another excellent team performance, but special mention to Aaron Main for a superb game at RH and Ryan Jeffrey in defence. This will be an exceptionally hard league but how well deserved are our U16 boys & Ash Mainwaring & Becca Shaw to be competing equally at this level in such a sportsmanlike way. Unlucky boys!

Congratulations to our very successful U16 side who came first in their league and are therefore now entered into the top Kent league for the second half of the season. Details of fixtures will be updated as soon as known. Well done Sladey and the team!

Sunday 27th November

Holcombe Under 16s                      1

Folkestone Optimist Under 16s                6

Stepping out in their new shirts sponsored by Stephen Alleyne Estate Agents, a 15 strong boy/girl squad continued their challenge for leader of the league.  Folkestone opened the score line through a well taken goal by Ben Shaw, set up nicely by Dan Marsh.  After sustained pressure another Shaw goal was fired home after an excellent cross from sister Rebecca on the left.  A lapse of concentration from the visitors combined with a determined Holcombe side left the score too close for comfort at half time ( 1-2).

Folkestone dominated the second half but missed too many chances on goal; Holcombe’s GK having a superb game.  Finally after several short corners Ash Mainwaring’s shot on goal sailed over the keeper’s head having been deflected a defender.  As Holcombe grew weary Opts raised their game and a further goal came from hardworking Jacob MacKay at left wing. Ben Shaw completed an excellent hat trick at centre forward and finally a well deserved goal from Ames Bell, who caught the end of a fierce cross in mid flight, took the visitors to victory. New players Danny Tomlinson and Emily Brough were an excellent addition to the squad.  Midfield held well with the talented Willem Bygrave making several superb drives forward.  Special mention to an exceptional defence; full backs Josh Clifford and Ryan Fagg were impenetrable and on occasion Josh’s attacking runs came scarily close to creating a goal. Aaron Main was outstanding on the right, coming close to opening his scoring. Well done to Chris & the team. Next and final match of this half of the season is a home game at 10.30am on 4thDecember – spectators very welcome.

Squad – Matt Whitehead, Ryan Fagg, Josh Clifford, Charlie Brooks, Danny Tomlinson, Ash Mainwaring, Callum Main, Dan Marsh, Willem Bygrave, Jacob MacKay, Rebecca Shaw, Ben Shaw, Ames Bell, Aaron Main, Emily Brough

The Under 16s played their first league fixture on Sunday 18th September against Old Williamsonians and they WON!!! A stunning first half performance saw them 5-0 up through goals from Willem Bygrave, Aaron Evison, Joe Levick(2) and Ashley Mainwaring (short corner).

Ryan Fagg and Josh Clifford were absolutely excellent in defence and inside forwards Willem and Dan Marsh worked tirelessly to move the ball forward and onto the enthusiastic forward line.  With 15 players all playing a vital role, coach Chris Slade led his side to victory.

The second half bought end to end hockey and the visitors finally clawed one back. A slightly less dynamic performance in the second half still resulted in another goal by Joe which lead to an interesting battle of hat-trick or jug avoidance – we shall never know!!

An excellent team spirit created by the effervescent Sladey began this young side’s journey to great things (we hope).  Thanks to Dave Vreony for superb umpiring and ALL the boys and girls for a hopeful start to the season.

Squad: Matt Whitehead (GK), Ryan Fagg, Josh Clifford, Ben Shaw, Ashley Mainwaring, Charlie Brooks, Aaron Main, Willem Bygrave, Dan Marsh, Ames Bell, Jacob Mackay, Rebecca Shaw, Joe Levick, Aaron Evison & Callum Main
