Folkestone 5ths Vs New Beccehamians
The 5ths impressive start to the season continued with arguably their most impressive result so far. Unbeaten New Beccs threaten to be a real threat and started well, reflecting the depth of experience in their team. They edged the first half during which the home side’s defense was tested but Paul Major directed operations and Owen Gosford and Tom Leaver responded and in general Ops coped well. Keeper Craig Hopkins pulled off a sparkling save, diving to his left and getting a hand on a powerful short range shot to deflected it wide, but even he could not prevent the opposition scoring with almost the last play of the first half.
The second half was an entirely different affair and one dominated by the 5ths who played open and controlled hockey. The equaliser followed when Joe Thresher crashed a ball into the goal mouth for Rolande Izzard to get the all important touch. Midfielders Liam Reardon, Chris Green and Sam Messenger, with each passing minute took more and more control, and supported by the rest of the team witnessed the gradual breakdown of the opponent’s game and confidence. Continual pressure resulted in a short corner from which Chris Green thumped home the winning goal. The rest of the game was a one way affair with the pace of wingers Martin Wilkins, Seb Constable and Jacob Mackay continuing to torment their opponents, securing the win and 3rd place in the league.
