Gillingham Anchorians – 1 Folkestone Ladies 3s – 1
Folkestone ladies travelled away to a sun drenched Gillingham for the second league game of this new season. The Ladies started well, passing the ball accurately and with success around the opposition. The forwards on the right – Justine Stephens and Jess Everitt made some penetrating runs towards the oppositions D but many times the team were thwarted by their final touch towards goal. The left hand side equally attacked with vigour and the forwards of Dani Mynard., Zoe Hoare and Emily Bough worked hard but frequently came up against a determined defender. The goal finally arrived from a short corner which was struck fast at goal by Michelle Phillips.
The midfield and defenders worked hard and slowed the opposition down by intercepting passes and making timely tackles. The back five had a new line up with Helen Rose in Goal, Rachel Brazier and Toni Marsh marshalling the back while Rachel Darling, Kersten Jebbett and Sarah Morris in the half positions; all working very well together preventing many of the attacks taking a shot on goal.
After a rousing team talk by Coach Laura Brazier at half time the team went out confident and motivated. The team continued to hold their controlling position until the last 10 minutes when they began to tire in the heat and the Gillingham team came back with more vengeance. Following a controversial decision for an incident just outside the D, the opposition were awarded a short corner which they converted with a powerful strike.
The game ended 1-1 with lots of hard work put in by the girls. Let’s hope next week they convert a few more of the attacking chances and then they will be back to winning ways.
