Ladies 3rds vs New Beccs
Folkestone Optimists Ladies 3 – 6
New Beccs – 1
The ladies started their penultimate league game at home in a confident mood. They
had all to play for, as they did not want to tarnish an unbeaten record of 16 games
undefeated. The team had a slightly changed look this week with the addition of
Helen Rose and returning players Nicky Ball and Suzi Beer to boost their confidence.
But with a new inbuilt trust things progressed optimistically.
The team needed to settle initially but then began slowly passing the ball around
and players began to build in confidence with Centre Midfielder Ashley Mainwaring
making drives through and opening up passes for winger Becca Shaw to drive in to
pass balls across to the forwards – Dani Mynard, Helen Rose, Julie Griffin, Jenny
Garrard and Sophie Wallace.
It was looking positive for the team and the forwards. Good accurate passing and
team work would result in the 3s continuing their good form. It was only a matter
of time before one of the girls places the ball in the net – Dani M broke the dead
lock swiftly followed by Becca. Helen scored from a cross that was fast and strong-
likened on the sideline to a cricket shot. The 3rds continued to attack and caused the
opposition to concede several Short corners, one was converted by Nicky Ball. The
Ladies created many, many chances and over the 70 minutes scored 6 goals.
Good play, sound and decisive tackles were also needed at the back on occasions
from Nicky Ball, Rachel Brazier, Kersten Jebbett and Kay Parsons as the opposition
did slip through the forward line of defence. Maybe the first time this season Jacqui
Main has been called to use her pads to defend the goal. Unfortunately the 3s also
allowed a goal in, which is most unusual, only the 3rd this season.
