Mens 2nds vs Marden Russets
Folkestone Men’s 2nd XI – 3
Marden Russets 2nd XI – 0
Folkestone put on a dazzling performance to overcome a strong Marden side and put
them selves back in a promotion spot.
Ops started the game knowing that only a win would do, lose to 2nd place Marden
and their promotion hopes would all be over. Folkestone exploded out of the blocks
and instantly pressured Marden high up the pitch, allowing them no space or time
on the ball. Marden struggled to get the ball out of their own half as the Folkestone
pressure was intensified. Despite this pressure, Folkestone were unable to convert
their chances into goals and the first half ended 0-0.
The second half started as the first finished as Ops threw men forward in search of
the opening goal. They didn’t have to wait long as a smart pass from Tom Nicholls
found Chris Slade in space who opened the scoring. It was 2-0 only five minutes later
as Ben Allon, who had missed an open goal, made up for that by twisting and turning
into the area before dispatching an unstoppable reverse stick strike into the back of
the net.
It was then Folkestone’s turn to withstand some heavy pressure, Defenders Ali Wall
and Sam Ireland worked hard to keep the attacks at bay, but Keeper Owain East was
still called upon to make some smart saves.
Folkestone then put the game beyond doubt with a well worked corner routine that
gave Tom Nicholls the chance to flick the ball home. He made no mistake.
