Mens 5ths vs New Beccehamians

  • W 3-2
  • New Beccehamians

New Beccehamians 3rds 2

Optimist 5ths 3

The 5ths faced opponents who are bottom in their league but it proved to be no
easy game as the determined New Beccs side attacked right from the start and went
ahead very early on with a well taken short corner strike which went in just inside
the post. The introduction of substitute Rolande Izzard tightened things up in
defence and before half time the Optimists produced some good scoring chances
via Seb Constable, Connor Colebrooke-Taylor and Chris New. After half time New
Beccs scored a breakaway goal to go 2 – 0 ahead but in response the 5ths raised
their game and with Terry Couzens and Ian Goldsmith providing good link up play
between attack and defence Ashley Messenger scored from open play and then
hardworking Sam Messenger laid on a good pass to Joe Thresher who pushed the
ball past the goalkeeper. With the score level and a quarter of the game left both
teams worked really hard to try and win the game but Matt Whitehead was very
effective at saving attacks on the Optimist’s goal and after the play had gone up
and down the field the 5ths won a short corner and Rolande Izzard capped a fine
individual performance by latching on to a deflection from the goalkeeper and flicking
the ball into the roof of the net. All credit to New Beccs who nearly scored right at the
end with a short corner shot which was pushed round the post off the goalkeeper’s
pads and the head of Brian Murrill on the line only to be ruled out anyway as too
high. To come from behind for this win showed great team spirit by the 5ths and
moved them up to 5th place in their twelve team league.
