Ladies 1st XI v Southend (L) Saturday 8th February

February 9, 2020

Continuing a strong unbeaten run, Ops were home to Southend. Despite a strong start by Ops, it was Southend who took first blood. Ops continued to play well and soon the score was 1-1 through a great individual goal by Liv. Unfortunately Ops went behind again but another great goal by set up by Laurel and finished first time by Claire brought the score back to evens. Soon after, Ops took the lead after a weighted ball from Becky to Claire created a 1-1 with the keeper. A clattering last ditch tackle by the keeper and defender combined ripped her stick from her hands, giving the umpire no choice by to award Ops a penalty flick. Erin stepped up and cooly and calmly fired the ball into the net, taking the score to 3-2. Just before half time, Liv struck again following a brilliant piece of team play. The score at half time was a goal fest at 4-2.

The start of the second half saw Ops play better and better. They created wave after wave of attacks and pressed Southend high up the pitch. Ops earned a short corner which youngster Laurel took calmly and fired into the bottom corner of the goal. Shortly afterwards, Becky led a driving run down the right wing and fired towards the goal. The ball ricocheted of the keeper towards the back post and Holly finished into the goal, never in doubt ! Southend managed to create an attack of their own and converted to take the score to 6-3. Still riding on a wave of confidence, Ops continued their strong performance with Becky tenaciously forcing the ball over the line in a goalmouth scramble. Last on the score sheet was Ash who found herself on the edge of the D in some space. She fired the ball home to take the final score to 8-3. Ops were over the moon with their performance level and composure and are looking to continue their unbeaten run away next week.
