Ladies 1st XI v Southend- Saturday 23rd March

March 25, 2019

In their final home game of the season, Ops ladies 1s hoped to put on a good show and get some points on the board, marking Katy’s last home match and the much anticipated return of Janet Fadagio.

Ops started the game well and created some early chances. It was however Southend who counter attacked quickly and committed numbers forward to score the first goal of the match. Taking advantage of their growing momentum in the game, Southend struck again putting Ops 0-2 within the first 15 mins. Ops struggled to string the ball together as they have been doing in recent weeks and, while they maintained possession of the ball, didn’t created many clear cut chances. They went in at half time 0-2.

Following a rousing team talk, Ops came out at the second half another side. They hassled the ball high and piled pressure on the Southend defence. They launched multiple attacks, and were unfortunate to not convert. Brilliant wing play from Jo, Hannah, Becky and Georgia supported the attacks and they looked dangerous. Following an extended period of high pressure however, a swift counter attack from Southend was converted taking the score to 0-3. Despite continued pressure by Ops, the score remained for the rest of the game. Ops are looking forward to their final game of the season next week away at Holcombe, which is sure to be an entertaining battle between 3rd & 4th place.
